Starting March 1, 2024, Paul Nghiem, MD, PhD, will serve as the founding chair of the Department of Dermatology at the UW School of Medicine.

Nghiem previously served as the head of the Division of Dermatology and then as interim chair when the Division of Dermatology achieved department status on Oct. 1, 2023. Leading the journey from division to department, Nghiem helped the division meet the stringent metrics and requirements for the new status and oversaw the continued growth of its clinical, research and teaching capacities.

Nghiem is also the director of the Skin Oncology Clinical Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, an adjunct professor in the UW School of Medicine Departments of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology and Immunology, and an adjunct professor in the UW School of Dentistry Department of Oral Health Sciences.

His clinical and research interests include Merkel cell carcinoma, melanoma, and complex skin cancer management. He oversees the Nghiem Lab, a laboratory focused on the biology of skin cancer with a special focus on Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare but lethal skin cancer.
