Virtual Caucus for Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Colleagues

April 19, 2021 @ 12:00 am - 1:00 pm

The murders of six Asian women last month in Atlanta has once again highlighted the increasing anti-Asian violence in our country and in our local communities, with devastating effects on the emotional, physical and mental health and well-being of our Asian colleagues and friends. Witnessing the ongoing George Floyd murder trial has retraumatized many in our Black communities. While these types of senseless attacks have particularly negative impacts on members of the targeted communities, harm can be experienced by our entire community.

To support members of our UW Medicine community in processing these current events, the Office of Healthcare Equity has once again been asked to convene affinity groups for our Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) colleagues and also a gathering space for white colleagues who want to stand in solidarity with BIPOC members of our community. Our goal is to provide a supportive and protected space for groups to connect and support each other with respect to ongoing events, without the need to educate or explain to others how they are feeling. Likewise, we aim to provide spaces for community strengthening and support from within each group without external influence.

Colleagues who wish to participate are asked to join the group that they identify with. Each group will have facilitators and virtual breakout rooms depending on the number in attendance. Facilitators will not take notes, no one will be identified and the gatherings will not be recorded.
