This July, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME®) reviewed UW Medicine and awarded it Accreditation with Commendation for six years as a provider of continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. Accreditation in the ACCME System means that UW Medicine delivers education that is relevant to clinicians’ needs, evidence-based, evaluated for its effectiveness, and independent of commercial influence. The accreditation covers Harborview, UW Medical Center, the UW School of Medicine, SCCA, Fred Hutch and other jointly provided activities.

In achieving Accreditation with Commendation status, UW Medicine demonstrated:

  • Integration of CME into the process for improving practice
  • Utilization of non-educational strategies to enhance change
  • Identification of factors outside its control that impact patient outcomes
  • Implementation of educational strategies to remove, overcome, and/or address barriers to change
  • Collaboration and cooperation with multiple stakeholders
  • Participation within an institutional framework for quality improvement

This decision confirms the strength and dedication of University of Washington School of Medicine’s continuing medical education program. It is through the work of outstanding course chairs, coordinators, faculty and departments across the WWAMI region that allows UW SOM to continue achieving the highest marks in education.
