Second-year medical student Steven Coppess has been named a 2018-2019 Magnuson Scholar. One recipient is chosen from each of the six University of Washington Health Sciences schools. The honor is named for U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson, who was known for his extraordinary career in public service.

Each Magnuson scholar was nominated by their respective Health Sciences school on the basis of outstanding academic performance and potential contributions to research in the health sciences.

Coppess felt called to pursue medicine after a decade-long career in finance and law. His background has influenced his medical career trajectory and objectives. Before starting medical school he met Dr. Kaalan Johnson, a UW professor and a pediatric otolaryngologist at Seattle Children’s hospital. Johnson inspired Coppess, particularly in the area of clinical research. Coppess hopes to be a practicing clinical physician with a focus on continuing clinical research. He hopes to make a big difference in the world and to help change lives for the better.
