Cheers to our colleagues as they start new roles at UW Medicine and as they move on to new chapters in their careers or retirement.

Here’s who is on the move:

Andrés Barría

Andrés Barría, PhD, has been named the first assistant dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Research and Graduate Education for the UW School of Medicine as of August 2023.

His work as assistant dean will develop and support relationships between the Office of Health Care Equity and biomedical research departments. Barría will also work on equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives with impacts to faculty recruitment, training programs, and other collaborative projects across the School.

Janna Friedly

Janna Friedly, MD, MPH, was appointed chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in the UW School of Medicine as of August 2023.

Friedly succeeds Peter Esselman, MD, MPT, who has served as department chair for 17 years.

Erik Malmberg

Erik Malmberg, PhD, JD, has been named to the new position of assistant dean for Equity & Medical Student Engagement for the UW School of Medicine, as of September 2023. The School created this position to maximize student support within the Office of Student Affairs, which provides a wide variety of services to students during medical school.

Prior to accepting this position, Malmberg was an assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

Laura Quinnan-Hostein

Laura Quinnan-Hostein, MD, is the new medical director for the UW Medical Center – Northwest Campus as of July 2023.
Quinnan-Hostein is board-certified in Internal Medicine and a clinical assistant professor in the Division of General Medicine at the UW School of Medicine. She has served as the medical director of the UW Medical Center -Northwest Hospitalist team, and the associate medical director and associate chief of medicine on the Northwest campus.

Ramesh Rengan

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center launched a new Division of Radiation Oncology in July 2023 led by Ramesh Rengan, MD, PhD, senior vice president and Professor in the Clinical Research Division.

Rengan will continue in his current role as department chair of Radiation Oncology at UW School of Medicine as he oversees the new Fred Hutch division.
