Starting June 16, 2022, G. Burkhard Mackensen, MD, PhD, FASE, will serve as the permanent chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine for the UW School of Medicine.
Mackensen has been the interim chair since November 2020. He is a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and the Allan J. Treuer Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology. He also serves as the director of Interventional Echocardiography at the UW Medicine Heart Institute and is an adjunct professor of Cardiology and Medicine.
Mackensen is an internationally recognized expert in interventional and perioperative echocardiography, cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine.
He has devoted much of his academic career to investigating mechanism of acute cerebral injury (e.g. stroke and cognitive decline) in the context of cardiac surgery and has pursued opportunities for brain protection in that setting. His other research focus relates to the field of minimal invasive transcatheter heart valve procedures and how to optimize cardiovascular patient outcomes using expert image guidance with echocardiography.
