Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan recognized Harborview for its mission and environmental stewardship during a press conference and tour of the West Hospital solar panel installation on Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Harborview received funding for the installation from Seattle City Light’s “Green Up” program, which allows customers to make voluntary contributions in support of renewable energy projects.
Over the past eight years, Harborview has reduced its carbon footprint annually by about 155,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). The solar panel installation is the largest for any hospital in the state and is expected to generate an estimated 109,000 kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year.
It will also support Harborview’s role as the disaster control hospital for Seattle and King County by providing a source of redundant power in case of an emergency.
