John Waldhausen, MD, was named division chief of Pediatric Surgery in the UW Medicine Department of Surgery.

This position was previously held by Robert Sawin, MD, and Waldhausen has been interim chief since Sawin stepped down last year. Waldhausen has also held the Seattle Children’s Hospital position of division chief of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery since 2006. He will now merge this role with his duties as the division chief of Pediatric Surgery in the UW Medicine Department of Surgery.

Since coming to Seattle for his pediatric surgery fellowship in 1992, Waldhausen has been an integral part of Seattle Children’s Hospital surgery. He joined the UW faculty in 1994 and was promoted to full professor in 2005.

Locally, Waldhausen was elected and served as president of the Seattle Surgical Society. Regionally, he is the current president of the North Pacific Coast Surgical Association. Nationally, he is currently the president-elect of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the premier academic surgical society for pediatric surgeons. He is a past president of the Association of Pediatric Surgery Program Directors and past director of the Pediatric Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery.
