The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum presented the John M. Eisenberg Award to Dr. Thomas H. Gallagher, professor and associate chair, Department of Medicine, and professor, Department of Bioethics and Humanities. The award recognizes individuals and organizations that have fostered groundbreaking initiatives for better care, healthy people and communities, and smarter spending. Gallagher has explored the experience of patients who have been harmed by medical errors, and how clinicians and hospitals communicate about these errors to minimize future such occurrences. Dr. Gallagher discusses his work here.
