On March 1, Dr. David Sherman, an affiliate professor of global health in the UW Schools of Medicine and Public Health and Community Medicine, began serving as the chair of the Department of Microbiology, taking over the position from Dr. James Champoux, who has served as chair for the past eight years. 

Dr. Sherman has been with the UW since 1998, and has held a variety of professorships in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the UW School of Medicine. Originally from Levittown, New York, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University, with additional postgraduate training at Rockefeller University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and associate director and professor at the Center for Infectious Disease Research in Seattle.
